Volunteer Spotlight - Speke Hall

Transform Lives Company has got such a brilliant variety of volunteer placements across the city for those who take part in Give Get Go.

Today we are spotlighting one of long-time partners who've created brand new opportunities for our participants. Over the years we have had many of our participants pass through the historic Speke Hall grounds as volunteers as part of their Give Get Go journey.

Here are some of the new placements available at Speke Hall

Conservation Volunteer 

Calling all historic housekeepers! Conservation Assistants love taking care of historic items, art and interiors, and keeping buildings looking their best, so that visitors can enjoy them well into the future.

What's involved? 
  • Helping with the day-to-day vacuuming, cleaning and dusting to keep Speke Hall looking its best for visitors.
  • Help to clean each room from top to bottom, treating each object individually; dusting, cleaning, washing or polishing
  • We work together to identify any items that are missing, damaged or needing attention, and keeping records up to date
  • Keeping an eye on light levels, looking out for any pests, mould or mildew
  • We love sharing our passion for conservation with people and we hope you will too, so there may be an opportunity to give demonstrations and talk to visitors about looking after the property
  • ‘Putting the house to bed’ at the end of the season – cleaning and packing objects away to keep them safe, and keeping records of storage
  • Getting to know and then following, health & safety and evacuation procedures
  • Always adhering to the National Trust’s Values
  • There might be some other activities that are of interest to you

 

Bookshop Volunteer

The secondhand bookshop at Speke Hall generates much needed funds to support conservation work in the House. This role requires great customer service and contributing to the receipt, checking, pricing and display of the books.

What's involved? 
  • Making visitors feel welcome and helping them enjoy their day
  • Serving customers, helping them find what they’re after and taking payments
  • Getting to know Speke Hall so you can answer visitors’ questions
  • Taking in donations of books, pricing up and sorting them into categories
  • Keeping the shop looking inviting and well stocked
  • Promoting the bookshop, thinking of new ways to promote and helping out with relevant events
  • Being aware of any security risks, and raising any concerns you have with staff
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures
  • There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with.

 

Grounds Volunteer

Helping out around the historic Speke Hall gardens. Making new friends using your gardening know-how or learning on the job getting your hands dirty in the great outdoors!

What's involved? 
  • Helping the garden team with everyday practical tasks to keep the garden looking its best
  • The opportunity to use and look after gardening equipment
  • Welcoming visitors in a warm and inviting manner, answering their questions where possible and providing information about the gardens
  • Helping with the general upkeep of the garden by weeding, digging, mulching pruning trees and shrubs, watering plants and lawn edging
  • Assisting with the development of the garden; planting trees and shrubs,
  • Establishing borders, garden features, clearing and pruning overgrown areas.
  • You are important in making sure things run as smoothly and safely as possible – this includes getting to know our health & safety and evacuation procedures
  • Reporting to your Volunteer Manager any concerns or issues you have, seeking assistance at the earliest opportunity.
  • Complying with the National Trust’s Values when volunteering at Speke Hall.
  • Keeping abreast of Volunteer updates and notices relevant to you and your team.
  • There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you

 

Room Guide Volunteer 

Get to know the depths of Speke Hall and use your people skills to welcome people from all over the world! Be part of a varied and enthusiastic team and make new friends. Spend time in fabulous rooms jam-packed with history!

What's involved? 
  • Welcoming every visitor
  • Learning more about Speke Hall, so you can share all that’s special - indoors and out
  • Helping visitors to discover more, making suggestions so they can enjoy their day, their way
  • Helping if people ask, and thinking about the needs of all visitors, including disabled people and families
  • Using your knowledge or skills, for example giving talks, helping with children’s activities
  • Showing visitors the safest routes out of the building in an emergency
  • Helping visitors understand why we need to take care of special places and, if needs be, raising any concerns you have with staff
  • Getting to know health and safety and evacuation procedures
  • There might be some other activities that are of interest to you, that we could use your help with.
