Building Confidence: Steven's Path to His Dream Job

The Journey:

Steven was referred to us by the job centre. He had been applying for jobs but was struggling with interview technique and confidence.

He joined GiveGetGo and attended the weeklong intensive workology session at Asda Woodchurch. This helped Steven to be more focused in his job search and with his CV. He applied for a role at as an apprentice ward clerk at Arrowe Park Hospital which is his dream role as his goal was to work in the NHS and start a career. He was very nervous about his interview. Through the coaching sessions we had talked about how he could improve his confidence through things like his Taekwondo and how moving into employment, widening his social circle would improve his confidence. We did some mock interview practice with questions related to the NHS and discussed in depth on how he would answer the question around his weakness, his lack of confidence. He felt prepared for the interview and went in feeling much more confident than in pervious interviews. The result was, he was offered the role. We continued to support Steven with the onboarding process and settling into his new job.

What have you learned?

I am more aware of the hidden jobs market. My personal statement feels more like me and to know how to address any gaps in my CV and to not stress about. I feel more comfortable in group situations and enjoyed the Workology sessions.  Before hand in social situations, I would hide in the corner but now I feel more comfortable and can gauge more in conversations.

What would you say was the turning point that really made a difference?

I would say starting the course was the first point, I knew I needed help, I knew I was going wrong somewhere. So, starting Give Get Go was the help I needed. I just didn’t know at that point what it would do for me. The real turning point was the mock interview. It gave me insight as to where I was going wrong and the feedback my coach gave me was invaluable in helping me to prepare for the interview. I couldn’t believe it when I got the call to say I got the job, I’m so used to being told I hadn’t been successful.

What would you say to anyone thinking about getting involved in GGG?

Definitely. I have already told my friend to get in touch with TLC…well, everyone needs a bit of TLC in their lives!
