TLC Opportunities at Aintree: A Day with the Jockey Club

Walking into Aintree racecourse with our participants and hearing them say, ‘Wow I’d love to work here.’

Then going into the room for our session to be greeted by an amazing view of the racecourse laid out in front of us and hearing, ‘I’ve lived here all my life and never seen this view,’ are just two of the many reasons why our invitation by the Jockey Club to an employability session at the racecourse was so important. You could almost hear the sound of the horses racing down the track. It brings to life the topics we have been discussing in our workology sessions. The opportunity to visit employers is invaluable.

Team TLC took sixteen of our participants to the event. We were treated to croissants and tea as they listened intently to Portia, Tom, and Sarah talk about their career journeys and how they found life at the Jockey Club. It was great to hear the Jockey Club team talk so passionately about their own experiences and how they enjoyed their roles. This was so inspiring for our participants to hear, and it definitely motivated them to apply for catering roles at the Grand National, which will not only give them up-to-date work but also give them such a prestigious event on their CV. The catering team have given our participants guaranteed interviews.

It then got interactive with the Jockey Club team setting each table a task to discuss CVs, applications, and interviews and what their best and worst experiences were. This led to some great debates and lots of advice for team JC. Tom from the Jockey Club showcased how to use LinkedIn effectively (they fill 40% of their roles from LinkedIn).

Portia talked about how she found her role at the Jockey Club via a friend who worked there – this reinforced one of the topics we are passionate about at TLC, the hidden job market.

We have had 7 participants apply for catering roles – 1 has applied for a permanent IT analyst role and we have had 5 taken on by a different part of the Aintree racecourse business for Grand National roles. That session broke the TLC record for the number of participants securing employment in one day!

We had an absolutely fantastic time, both the participants and team TLC were buzzing with excitement all day. Thanks Tom, Portia, Sarah, and the Jockey Club for making us so welcome. We hope to see you again soon (we need to swap mugs!).

Events like this are so important, as partnering with new organisations in Liverpool and finding businesses willing to create opportunities for their community is crucial. These partnerships not only open doors for our participants but also strengthen the local economy and foster a sense of community. By collaborating with businesses that are committed to making a difference, we can help more individuals achieve their career goals and move forward with their lives.

Many of the employers we partner with, such as The University of Liverpool, The Liverpool Royal Philharmonic, LIVV Housing and now CleanEvent, offer guaranteed interviews for their vacancies to anyone who we support. As we all know, gaining an interview can be hard work for the jobseeker, so we give them one less thing to worry about and get their foot in the door, and provide a sense of security and a real opportunity to showcase their skills and potential. At TLC, we are proud to partner with organisations that offer guaranteed interviews to all our participants, ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to succeed.
