Thoughts for a Mindful Monday- Paying it Forward
Our GiveGetGo Programme Manager reflects on how good things can happen when you least expect it….
“A few weeks ago I found myself without a car for the first time in years, and had to rely on public transport to get around. I found I quite enjoyed the experience of being driven rather than being the driver, and I passed the time staring out of the window and watching the world go by.
On one of these journeys the bus was jam packed with rush hour commuters. The bus was silent, and I broke that silence with a massive sneeze! To my surprise the woman sat next to me said, “Bless you!” and gave me a big smile.
I can’t tell you how much that meant to me, a total stranger not caring about embarrassing herself and just saying something nice and caring and smiling at me. A seemingly small gesture but it had a big impact on my day.
In a time when we hear nothing but doom and gloom on the news and there is so much suffering in the world the smallest act of kindness can make a big difference to somebody. The woman on the bus didn’t know that I was still feeling shaken up and a bit low after quite a serious car crash, nor will she know that her actions gave me a lift and here I am weeks later still thinking and talking about it.
In a sort of cosmic game of snap, I felt inspired to pay the kindness forward and I made sure that in the following days I showed thoughtfulness and gratitude to others – not because I wanted recognition or praise but just BECAUSE.
Be kind. You have no idea what people are dealing with, and the smallest kindness could just be the thing to brighten up somebody else’s day.”
